- I was diagnosed with Asperger's sysndrome aged 38 and am a proud Aspie. I am writing a book about my travels with my teddy bear Bearsac; it touches on Asperger's syndrome in that it shows the barriers of travel to AS.
I am currently working in an organisation run and controlled by people with learning difficulties; the Management Committee, Director, Managers and Project Workers are only people with learning difficulties. We campaign for the rights and equal inclusion of people with learning difficulties and work as part of the wider disability movement; we also give training to ‘professionals’ on how to consult with people with learning difficulties. Hopefully my hours will go up now we have got more funding for new jobs.
I used to be a Support Worker, supporting the people with learning difficulties do their jobs. However, I was diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome in September 2005 and as it is counted as a social learning difficulty, and as I think I have specific learning difficulties, I was then able to do the better jobs the people with learning difficulties do in the user-led organisation.
In my personal life I live alone (as a human anyway) with lots of teddy bears! The main two have their own MySpace. Choc-Ice I sleep with and Bearsac is my travel buddy and goes just about everywhere with me. My boyfriend hates Bearsac, but loves Choc-Ice.
I have written a book about my travels with 'Bearsac'. It touches lightly on Asperger's syndrome in that how the traits of AS play a role on my travels and how barriers met whilst travelling affect my AS traits. It is mainly about my travels with Bearsac though. It is called Travels With My Teddy Bear – it should be released 2nd February 2009. Bearsac is like a preoccupation I guess. He has another website with photographs of him with famous people, photographs on our travels, a teddy bear problem page where he advises other teddies, it’s mad. bearsac . com but close the gaps each side of the dot (have to do it like this to get around MySpace’s not wanting us to put URLs in messages etc. Or just search for bearsac.
There is also an Asperger’s page I did to bring more awareness.
