LEGAL fire performing

Hello all =)

My name is Matt. I've been a poi spinner for a little over 2 years now. Unfortunately, I never reside in an area where there are a bunch of us. Hell....I'm usually the only one around that does spin. I've kept in contact with the local fire dept. and fire commisioner wherever I've lived so that I could try to perform legally. Most of the time, I've gotten the run around and just wound up lighting up without permits, etc..

I now live in Oceanside, Ca., and KNOW that there's fire people in SD and LA that perform on the beaches. I've seen pics and videos. As far as the Oceanside Harbor and Beaches Dept. goes......it is technically illegal to have any fires outside of designated fire pits. Obviously, they never had our art form in mind when making such laws. Maybe they did......who knows.

I wanted to start this discussion for anyone that is in the same boat as me. I want to perform in public areas such as at the beach without getting hastled by the local PD.

If you have any info on Ca (or anywhere else in the world) and how to obtain permission/contacts in the system..........please share them in this forum. This way we can all take the right steps to not having our artform "banned" anywhere for fire negligence.

you gotta get in contact with the Fire Cheif/Commissoner
I live in GA, and I got in contact with the local FD. after talking to 4 diffrent people, i got an email address. after many emails, explaining exactily what i was trying to do (sent him some videos) and told him all i wanted was to make videos. heres what he told me.

Not allowed in any public building
Not allowed in any place of gathering
Not allowed on any beaches
Not allowed on any public property

pretty much the olny "allowed" place was private property. so, all my videos are from my front yard.
soon ill take em to the beach for a video photo shoot. ill risk a fine for art.

Hey Kind... I live in Ga also. I got a permit to spin from one area to another. Well, I got an open fire permit from the county. Basically I can spin anywhere without the permit. There is NO ONE in this county that spins poi. NO ONE. Even the local, county, and state peace officers WATCH me spin. I think they think it is either:
A) Cool as hell
B) Something to share with the home folk at church on Sunday for a fiery platform.
C)They think I am crazy and gather around and laugh about it later.

I am sure it is one of the above but they do not care. Literally. I was spinning at a lake here owned by the city and the cops came... and stayed. They watched. They didn't say a word to me on not to do it but rather on how to do it. Even with rules and regulations it is still a who knows who world out there. :)

I will take a few minutes to look up the laws around here? Where are you located at? I am in Camden County. If you are here... let's spin... YAH!

camden country is very close tow here i live! I live in Glynn County, like 15 or 20 min away. we SHOULD hook up! for i too have NO one to spin with....

Well, while it may be true that you are not legally allowed to spin fire many places, the truth is that most people just do it illegally. In Eugene we spin in public places, by the beach, at gatherings, and so far have not been hassled. I know many that have done the same. You just have to be careful. If you want to follow the law to the tee you will have to stay within private grounds.

Yes. I used to live in Bellinghman WA, and there (the pasific North west, and the west / left coast) is very tollerable in that part of the country.

here in the South East, the mind set of people is completly diffrent, and much LESS open minded.... (Drrrty Souf Mentality here)

ya i'm not gonna lie i have never contacted the fire department for permission to spin anywhere or even for information on fire permits i'm a utah guy and spinning is probably one of the rarest things around here unfortunately. But, i have gone out to any and all the places i have thought would be cool places to spin, other than the mountains for obvious reasons, and i haven't been hassled i've had police officers stop and get out of their car to watch me but they never bothered me

i'm glade you brought this i'm kinda in the same boat. There are a few pulic places i like to go and fire breath at for a few kool pic's. i'm mostly show off in fornt of local group's and my friends. I'd like to do some public fire breathing.

the only place i know of is dockweller beach near LAX, i live in anaheim myself... i did hear something about a place in LA but i dont remember much... i normally just light up in the street right in front of my place, no body has called the cops yet, as for other beaches there isnt much you can do as far as i know permits are pretty much impossible to obtain.

my fire cheif said that i cannot obtain ANY permits to let me spin ANYWHERE other than private property...

Oh well, people love it, and i thrive on it.

duno, guesin ur from the US but in england Ive been having the same trouble and here we have Equity which is the trade union for performers (mostly actors) but to become a member its about £100 each year.
And that sorts your insurance so all you need in the permision of whoever owns the property on which ur spinning, and if ur in a group if each of you have Equity membership and perform one at a time its fine.

I live in Indy and have found only a hand full of people that spin here. I haven't talked to the fire department yet but i'm Soon moving to Charleston SC, so if any one is in the area please let me know. But i'll prolly end up just lighting up on the beach no matter what the law is. i really don't think people with mind as long as i'm stupid about it. Currently i spin at my apartment complex and no one has turned me in yet. So i keep my fingers crossed. have fun spinning.
